68% of searches are zero-click. Still counting your top-10 rankings?

If you're still opening Search Console and celebrating a third-place ranking for some fat keyword — I've got bad news for you. 68% of Google searches are now zero-click. The person got their answer right in the results page and left. Not to your site. Nowhere.

AI Overviews already reach 2.5 billion users a month. This isn't some Google experiment that "might get pulled next quarter." It's a new layer of search results that's permanently wedged itself between you and the user. And a top-10 organic ranking is no longer a guarantee anyone sees you at all.

There's a flip side, and it's an honest one: the traffic that does make it through to your site from AI tools — ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Mode — converts 31% better than regular organic traffic. People arrive already "warmed up," with a formed intent, having passed through a layer of AI filtering. Fewer random clicks, more meaningful visits.

The conclusion is simple: fighting for a position in classic search results is a dead race on its own. You need to fight for presence in the AI layer. That's a different discipline — though it grows out of the same soil: technical SEO and content expertise.

What to actually do about it

First, stop flying blind. Once a month, check whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode mention you when asked about your topic or brand. This isn't paranoia — it's the same kind of monitoring that rank tracking used to be.

Second, LLMs don't pull brand information out of thin air. They pull it from your site, from Wikipedia, from Crunchbase, from open databases. If there are discrepancies — in your company description, in facts, in numbers — the model gets confused or just stops trusting the source. Consistency of brand data across every platform is now literally part of SEO work, not some formality for the legal team.

Third, set up your analytics for reality. GA4 should catch traffic from chat.openai.com, perplexity.ai, and Google AI Mode as separate segments. Otherwise you won't see that part of your conversion growth is coming from exactly here — and you'll chalk the success up to luck.

In Search Console, look at the AI Overviews and AI Mode reports — impressions by page. That's your new source of truth about what the user actually sees before they ever click.

Content: stop grinding out narrow articles

A separate point about content, and this is where it's easy to fool yourself. AI search engines don't need "one more piece of text for a keyword" — they need full entity coverage. Picture the topic as an island — you don't need one cabin on the shore, you need a map of the whole island, every trail included. A cornerstone piece that covers the entire entity cluster and radiates into related subtopics — that's what actually earns a spot in AI answers.

Do a content gap analysis against your competitors — find which edge topics you haven't covered at all. A narrow, single-keyword article is yesterday's logic. You need to think in terms of covering the whole topic, including related entities — not in terms of page count in the index.

For YMYL niches, and really for any business where trust decides everything, this matters double. Models default to the most complete and most consistent source. Be that source.

I'm not saying classic SEO is dead — organic rankings still feed you. But if you're only optimizing for the old results page, you're optimizing for a train that's already leaving. The ones building presence in the AI layer right now will own that space by default a year from now — simply because they showed up early.
