AI Mode just hit a billion users. Time to rethink your traffic model

Search Engine Land dropped their first-half 2026 report, and there's one number in it you can't just scroll past. Google's AI Mode has crossed 1 billion active users per month. This isn't an experiment or a toy for geeks anymore. It's already the main channel through which a chunk of the audience sees the internet at all.

And a lot of people are still fighting for rankings in classic search, like it's still 2019. I know this trap well — I used to cling to old metrics myself, because they're familiar and easy to grasp. But here's the fact: while you're measuring success by a top-10 spot, your competitors are already measuring whether their brand makes the shortlist of an AI answer.

Citation is the new currency — but not the only one

Used to be, whoever ranked higher won. Now whoever gets mentioned by the model wins. And there's an important nuance the report spells out directly: 91% of citations don't overlap between different AI systems. ChatGPT cites one thing, Perplexity cites another, Google AI Overviews cites a third. Being present in one system tells you nothing about your presence in another.

For affiliates and iGaming projects, this means one simple thing: you need to monitor each system separately. If you're only watching Google AI Overviews and think that's enough — you're seeing a quarter of the picture, at best.

A mention is not a recommendation

Second thing that's easy to miss: getting cited and getting recommended are two different things. A model might mention you in a list of five operators or affiliate offers, but end up recommending someone else — whoever it trusts more. The report gives a clean number here: 75% of users pick the top option from an AI shortlist, but which option ends up on top depends on brand trust, not just the fact of being mentioned.

Trust in the world of AI search isn't some abstract thing for branding decks. It's a concrete asset — a site either has it or doesn't. And it's built the same way it always was: reviews, track record, transparency, sustained presence in your niche. AI models are trained on real trust signals from the web. They don't invent trust out of thin air.

What you actually need to do

First — stop writing fluff. Models are looking for a direct answer, not a 300-word warm-up before the point. If your casino bonus page opens with the history of the gambling industry, it's going to lose to a page that leads straight with wagering terms and honest numbers.

Second — the technical side hasn't gone anywhere, it just changed meaning. Load speed and site accessibility matter now not because they're a Google ranking factor, but because the agentic systems crawling and summarizing content for an answer need fast, clean access to your information. A slow site is a site an agent simply won't have time to process properly.

Third — build your strategy around the brand, not around keywords. This is especially true in iGaming and affiliate marketing: a user doesn't ask an AI "best casino for keyword X," they ask "which operator can I trust to actually pay out my withdrawal." An answer to that question is built over years of reputation, not a one-time content optimization pass.

What this means for the niche

iGaming and affiliate projects have always operated under default distrust — regulatory pressure, audience skepticism, everyone fighting over the same keywords. The shift to AI search only sharpens this dynamic: if a model has to pick who to recommend on a sensitive topic like betting or casinos, it's going to pick the source with the least risk for itself. That means whoever has trust confirmed from the outside, not just claimed in their own copy.

So if you're still building your content plan around top-10 rankings — it's time to rebuild it around presence in AI answers and around earning brand trust. This isn't a quick fix, but it looks like there's no alternative left anyway.

If you want to figure out where your project stands in this new traffic model and what to strengthen first, let's talk it through in an audit and consultation.
