Google Is Hiring Someone to Wean You Off Clicks

I read the news and wasn't even surprised. Google opened a product manager role whose job is to find new ways to share AI answers. Not to drive traffic to a site. Not to generate a click. Specifically to share the answer in a way that keeps the user inside Google.

This isn't a random vacancy. It's a plan.

Pichai already said it outright: search, AI Overviews, and cloud agents are merging into one system. So this isn't "an experiment with an AI block at the top of results" — it's a strategic direction for years ahead. And if you live off search traffic — and in iGaming affiliate marketing, that's exactly what you live off — this is a signal you can't afford to ignore.

Traffic attribution is only going to get worse

If you used to be able to track the chain fairly clearly — wrote an article about a bookmaker's bonus, got clicks, got conversions — that chain is going to break more often from here on. The user gets the answer right in the results page, clicks nothing, and your content just becomes raw material for someone else's answer.

Unpleasant? Yes. But it's a fact you need to work with, not argue against.

What to actually do about it: stop measuring content success by clicks alone. Watch brand searches, direct visits, and whether you show up as a source in AI Overviews at all. If you're being cited, you exist in the new ecosystem — even without a click. If you're not cited, you're invisible to Google, and no amount of links will fix that.

Guest posting became a slow-motion landmine

Then there's links. Recent data shows roughly 80% of sites used for cheap guest posting lost their organic traffic over the past year. That's not a coincidence or a temporary dip. Google is deliberately cleaning out networks of donor sites that exist only to pass link equity.

If your link-building strategy is built on buying $20-30 posts on random sites, you're sitting on a bomb right now. That site can lose visibility at any moment, and the value of your link disappears with it. Worst case, it drags your own project down too, if your link profile pattern looks suspicious.

Give value first — get the link later. That principle applies here too: real, active sites with a real audience will link to you because your material is worth it, not because you paid for placement in the text.

Brands are showing up less often in the top spot on listicles

One more detail: Google is increasingly not putting well-known brands in the number-one spot on list-style pages. For iGaming this matters doubly — the whole niche runs on listicles like "top 10 bookmakers" and "best casinos." A big brand used to land first almost automatically on domain authority alone. Now the ranking logic works differently, and often not in favor of name recognition.

This opens a window for smaller, less-hyped but honest and solid projects. And at the same time, it hits anyone who was counting on coasting purely on brand reputation.

What to do right now

Build content for citation, not just for clicks. Clear answers, structured data, plain definitions, and FAQs — things that are easy to pull out and show in an AI block. This doesn't mean dropping depth, but it does mean putting clarity upfront, not burying it in the middle of a long article.

Strengthen E-E-A-T for real, not just on paper. Real authors, real experience, verifiable data — because gaming the rankings keeps getting more expensive and riskier, while authenticity is still something that's hard to fake at scale.

And diversify your traffic sources now, before organic search takes a sharp hit. Email, social, direct brand traffic — none of that is a "nice to have" anymore. It's insurance.

Google isn't changing the rules tomorrow — it's changing them right now, while you're reading this. The only question is whether you'll adapt before it becomes a condition of survival.
