Google Rolled Out AI Impressions. Finally, Something to Compare Against

Google added a separate metric in Search Console — AI Search Impressions. Now you can see how many times your page showed up specifically in AI Overviews, not in regular search results. Sounds minor. In practice — this is the first time we've been given an actual number instead of guesswork.

Before this, the whole conversation around AI Overviews was built on gut feeling. "Feels like traffic dropped." "Seems like we're getting shown there." Now you can open a report and see a fact. That changes the conversation — with a client, and with yourself. Belief replaced by data.

Why everyone should be watching this

If you run a content site, a YMYL project, or anything where visibility matters — this metric is now as basic as regular impressions. Don't check it once a quarter. Monitor it regularly, right alongside your top-10 rankings.

Here's what's genuinely interesting: a page can barely show up in the regular top results but pop up in AI answers all the time. Or the opposite — hold top-3 for years and never once appear in AI Overviews. These are two different ranking mechanisms, and until now we could only assume that. Now you can check it against your own data.

What to do about it in iGaming

I'll say it straight upfront: don't expect Google to start citing betting content and casino reviews in AI answers as generously as it cites health or finance articles. The niche is sensitive — YMYL filters hit harder here than average. But that's exactly why this metric is worth watching closely. It shows you how much your content is even perceived by the system as "a source worth citing."

Look not just at the impressions number, but at which pages actually get in there. Sections with clear structure, hard facts about bonus terms, licenses, RTP, withdrawal rules — those have a better shot at landing in an AI answer. Watery promotional copy with no substance won't get picked up, even if it ranks decently in regular search.

How to read the gap

Pull your AI Impressions data and compare it against your list of traditionally top-ranking pages. You'll almost certainly see a mismatch. That's not a bug and not a reason to panic — it's two different sets of signals. The traditional top loves link equity, domain age, behavioral metrics. AI Overviews love structure, direct answers to the question, fact-checkable phrasing, authority signaled through E-E-A-T.

In practice, this means a page that ranks well classically but doesn't show up in AI doesn't necessarily need a full rebuild. Often it's enough to add a clear block with a direct answer up top, FAQ markup, and hard numbers instead of vague phrases.

What to do right now

Three steps, no extra theory. First — go into Search Console and find this report, if you haven't already. Second — pull the list of pages showing up in AI Impressions and look for what they have in common structurally. Third — apply those patterns to pages that should be showing up in AI by topic but currently aren't.

This isn't a one-off task. Google is clearly going to keep building out AI search, and the people who learn to read this data now will be a step ahead once AI Overviews take up even more space in the results. Same as in sports — you train before the match starts, not during it.
