Short keywords are dying. Here's what betting affiliates need to do

There's fresh data from Search Engine Land on Google Ads queries, one year after AI Mode launched. And it shows a trend that a lot of people in affiliate marketing are still ignoring.

The share of 1-2 word queries dropped from 42% to 24%. The share of 3-4 word queries grew from 33% to 48%. People stopped typing "casino bonus" and started typing "what casino gives a no-deposit bonus on slots for beginners." This isn't a minor statistical shift — it's a change in how a person formulates their own need.

Here's what matters more to you and me: conversions shifted even harder than the queries themselves. 1-2 word queries lost 10 points of conversion share. 3-4 word queries grew from 20% to 46%. That tells you one thing: short-tail generates traffic, but not money. Long-tail generates both.

Why this happened now

AI Mode and AI Overviews trained people to talk to the search engine instead of picking keywords. A person no longer thinks "how do I phrase this so Google understands me" — they just ask, the way they'd ask a friend. This is a natural process, and it's only going to get stronger.

For iGaming this is especially sharp, because our audience already lives on questions: "is it worth playing this slot," "why won't this bookmaker let me withdraw," "what football betting strategy actually works." We used to package this into SEO copy targeting "best bookmakers 2024." Doing that now is basically writing into a void.

What to change in your architecture

If you still run one page per one keyword, that model is dead. In your position, I'd rebuild the site structure around semantic clusters, not individual keywords. One solid page about a specific type of bonus should cover dozens of conversational variations around that topic: terms, reviews, hidden catches, comparisons with alternatives, the specific questions beginners actually ask.

FAQ blocks aren't a checkbox formality — they're a direct hit on how people search now. The question "can I withdraw bonus money without wagering it" is much closer to real user behavior than the keyword "bonus withdrawal."

What to actually do

Prioritize pages built around 3-6 word intents, not bare keywords. When you plan content, start from how a person actually phrases a thought out loud — not from what the frequency column in Keyword Planner shows you. Fillers like "best [word] online" are last decade's language, and the search engine doesn't parse them the way it parses natural speech.

Optimizing for voice and conversational search isn't a separate feature here — it's a direct consequence of the same trend. If people type in phrases, they search by voice in phrases too, and these two data streams are now collapsing into one behavior model.

What this means for the betting niche

iGaming is a brutally competitive vertical, where every conversion point costs real money. If conversions are massively flowing into the long tail, and you're still fighting for the top spot on "1xbet bonus," you're fighting for traffic that brings in less and less money. This isn't about short keywords being useless — they still matter for branded and navigational traffic. But the real growth right now is in expanded, question-based, conversational phrasing, and that's where you need to shift your content plan resources.

If you want to rebuild your site's architecture around this shift without losing conversions during the transition, I can help you figure out what to do next.
