Pichai Said It Out Loud: Search As You Know It Is Going Away

The head of Google said out loud what a lot of us have suspected for the past year: classic search is merging with AI into a single agentic system. Not "one more feature bolted onto the results page" — a change in the very nature of what we used to call search.

What does this mean in practice? The user no longer types a query to get ten blue links and figure out where to click on their own. They state a task — and the agent carries it out on their behalf: compares, filters, decides, sometimes even acts. Search is turning from a librarian pointing at a shelf into an assistant running an errand.

To me this isn't a shock. It's the logical continuation of what we already saw with AI Overviews. Google has spent years collecting data on user intent. The agentic layer is the next step: from "find information" to "get it done."

What this means for an SEO specialist

Keywords as a unit of optimization are losing weight. An agent doesn't care about phrase frequency — it needs to understand intent and get the user to a result. Which means content written for "pick some keywords and sprinkle them across tags" will lose to content that actually answers the whole task: step by step, no filler, clear structure.

Structured data isn't about "a nice snippet in the results" anymore. It's the language you use to talk to the agent. If your markup is vague, and you've got no FAQ or step-by-step blocks, the agent simply has nothing to pull and interpret. It will go to whoever gave it a machine-readable answer.

Content built purely to rank in the classic SERP — a catchy headline, filler around a keyword, a link at the bottom — just doesn't read as useful in this paradigm. It was written for a human scrolling with their eyes, not for a system that needs to complete a task.

How this lands on iGaming and affiliate marketing

In our niche, this hits especially hard. Betting and casino verticals have lived for years on "drag in traffic at any cost, the funnel will do the rest." If an agent starts acting on the user's behalf — comparing bookmaker terms, bonuses, withdrawal limits — the winner isn't the one shouting "TOP bonus" the loudest. It's whoever's content gives the agent honest, structured, verifiable data.

This is also about E-E-A-T, except now it's not an abstract Google requirement — it's a literal condition for your content to be readable by a machine. An agent can't infer your expertise for you. It needs clear signals: who the author is, where the data comes from, how current it is, whether it's backed by facts.

What to do right now

If I were you, I wouldn't wait for this to become mainstream — I'd start rebuilding my approach today. Break content into clear semantic blocks: question-answer, step-result, condition-conclusion. Add structured data not as a checkbox exercise, but deliberately, matching the real structure of your content. Stop thinking in keywords — start thinking in user tasks: what they want to accomplish, not what they want to find.

And yes, it's uncomfortable. Retraining how you think is always uncomfortable. But everything I've learned in this industry points to one thing: whoever adapts first takes the spot, while everyone else is still arguing about whether this is a passing trend.

If you need help shifting to an agent-oriented approach in both content and the technical side, we can talk it through via our services.
